I was looking for a cordless trimmer to use around my small yard. This trimmer works perfectly for what I need it for. The trimmer comes with an extra battery, which would be needed if your yard is large, I can use it twice before it runs out. The adjustable cover makes edging easy. Overall a great trimmer for those that have a small to medium sized yard.

This is an awesome trimmer for people who are just starting out working on their yard. It is light weight and easy to maneuver. There is definitely a learning curve when trimming and edging and my yard may not be as perfect as a professionally manicured lawn, but it looks pretty darn good if I do say so myself. I would highly recommend this trimmer, especially for people with small yards. (I have been warned that the batteries may not last very long, but with my small yard, I haven't had any problems.) This spool is a great replacement piece, however if you need more line & you have the time to roll out line Wal-Mart sells over 200 feet for only #=$3.47. However you will have to roll on to the spool by hand which really doesn't take that long.

We bought this product because we needed a spool replacement for our weed whacker. Unfortunately, when this string breaks, it breaks inside the spool so you need to open the whole thing up to pull the string to the outside. That gets really old to have to take it apart every time the string breaks.

Customer Review: Affordable and easy to wind
I have been having a difficult time finding the replacement spool for my string trimmer so I picked this up and was able to wind my spool completely with plenty left over. The big test came in actual use and this exceeded all expecations. Since this provides enough line to wind 7 spools it's also very cost effective. After I wound my spool I let it sit for a few days before use, although I do not know if this was necessary, but I thought it might help the spool keep it's shape better. This string is just a bit thicker than my old string trimmer was accustomed to, but it worked out perfectly, and the remaining string remains in the packaging neatly.

Customer Review: Major Lack of Quality Control!
I received this trimmer not knowing what to expect from reading the other reviews of this product. The trimmer motor unit looked well used, maybe what one would expect after 1 week of use. My major disappointment was finding the lower trimmer attachment tube was crushed to the point it would not come close to attaching to the head unit. After discussing this with the CPO rep, they did not have a replacement to exchange but gave me the number of an authorized Ryobi dealer, whom seemed clueless with regard to the reconditioned warranty. I finally took matters into my own hands and reshaped the end with pliers and a screwdriver. It now fits! BTW, you will get a cert saying this product "..passed a rigorous series of tests"...BS! BTW the handle and guard included were new.

Troy-Bilt TB525CS 17-Inch 29cc 4-Cycle Gas Powered Clutched Curve Shaft String Trimmer

REVIEW:The joys of the four-cycle engine are many. First, they run on straight gas, so there's no need to prepare an oil-gas mixture. Second, they give you more torque at a greater range of speeds. Third, they run quieter than two-cycle engines and produce fewer emissions. As with most good things, however, there is also a downside: Two-cycle engines will give you more horsepower, pound for pound, than four-cycle engines (in other words, they're lighter per HP).

The question, then, is whether you're willing to put up with a little more weight or sacrifice some HP in order to have a clean, quiet cut. (In some states, this decision may already have been made for you-there seems to be a trend toward mandating that two-cycle engines be retrofitted with catalytic converters.)

If the answer is yes, then Troy-Bilt's 29 cc curve-shaft trimmer is a great option. At 13 pounds it's lighter than older four-cycle models, and it has a wide 17-inch cutting swath. It features "SpringAssist" starting, which means you don't have to yank on the pull-cord-a slow and steady pull will get the thing started. This trimmer is well-balanced, and the curved shaft and adjustable D-handle make for comfortable use. Like most trimmers, this one includes a bump-head line release; Troy-Bilt's "SpeedSpool" system means quick, easy line replacement. As an added bonus, it's compatible with interchangeable Troy-Bilt attachments, too.

Customer Review: line feed has issues
I purchased this trimmer from a local Lowe's & don't know if the problems I encountered was a Troy-Bilt or a Lowe's problem. I suspect that it's both. The trimmer started with some effort, but once running it was powerful & worked well UNTIL I had to change the line, then the trouble started. I followed the directions very carefully & every time the line started to advance ON ITS OWN (not bumping the head at all) & in 1 minute the line was all gone. I tried to restring several times but no luck. Took it back to Lowe's & got the lame excuse "I'm not familiar with that head" & got put into another TB trimmer (the TB514CS). That trimmer also had line feed issues with similar results from Lowe's (see my review of that trimmer on this site & the Troy-Bilt site). I have had great results from a Homelite 2-cycle trimmer that I have used for many years, replacing the string on the spool and all with no problems, so it's not like I'm inexperienced with trimmers & lawn equipment. So now I have no working trimmer & will definitely try a different retailer. The manager at Lowe's got an earful however.
Customer Review: Line feed was a problem
Bought this one at Lowes 3 weekends back. Starting the trimmer was a very smooth operation. Just followed the procedure exactly the way they had described. It vibrates quite a bit, but you get used to it. After exactly 3 feet of trimming the string broke. I tried bumping the head to release the line but that didn't do anything. Opened the head to find out that the string had welded inside to the plastic and wouldn't move. So had to remove and wind both the strings again. After about 20 feet more the string gave way again. Again, followed the instructions to release the line, by bumping it on the surface, didn't work. I opened the head again and found out this time the string was just stuck and wouldn't move. After about an hour of fighting around I gave up. Started the trimmer the next weekend and had to stop 3 times to fight with the string release. On the 4th try, I emptied the gas tank, drove back to Lowes, and got my money back. I am now again on a lookout for a 4-cycle trimmer.

Don't purchase this item. I purchased it for my husband for Father's day. When it came, it wouldn't start, called the company and they gave us a local repr for repair. He stated it would cost more than it is worth to fix it so I sent it back. Know I have to deal with Amazon, to get my money back which I doubt I will never get because of their return policy. Very discouraged and felt Amazon purchased rejects from Weed Eater to dump on their customers. I bought this for the weed eater attachment, I will use the saw some but mostly the weed eater. Shipped on time tracked it online, amazon used fedex. arrived in orginal box so it was no wondering what it was. No damage from shipping. Started great, 2 pulls, but I did follow the instructions and the advice others gave here, push the priming button 6 times. Weed eater attachement works great but just some getting used to with the angle and not a straight shaft, that is the only reason it is 4 and not 5 stars. Saw worked good, I would stay that I used this for about 45-60 min and must of started and stoped it 4-5 times and I moved branches and changed attachments. After it was warm it started on first pull. give it some gas before you tilt it upward to cut a branch, or it won't have the power. Great machine works great,

This item has performed very nicely for what I had hoped to use it for. It is a bit heavier than I thought it would be (most noticeable when reaching for those tall branches)but it is getting the job done. I also purchased the brush cutter option for this and it also does a nice job cutting.
